Reports from Nonprofits
Reports from Minnesota nonprofits often provide another view of the state's issues than is available through official reports from state agencies and task forces. Several reports, produced by Minnesota organizations, are important in informing state policy decisions. Two of them are included in this month's list of new acquisitions.
One influential study is the Wilder Research statewide, triennial, one-day census of people who are experiencing homelessness or living in temporary housing programs in Minnesota. The study is comprised of a count and face-to-face interviews that result in a series of reports. The 2018 census is summarized in Single Night Count of People Experiencing Homelessness: 2018 Minnesota Homeless Study Fact Sheet. The study indicates a 10 percent increase in the number of Minnesotans experiencing homelessness since the 2015 survey—10,233 individuals. Additional reports analyze aspects of homelessness; the most recent report, Characteristics of People Who Identify as LGBTQ Experiencing Homelessness, was published in September.
Another important report published by a nonprofit, is the annual Minnesota Nonprofit Economy Report: A Statewide and Regional Analysis, from the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits--an association of more than 2,200 Minnesota nonprofits. The 2019 report provides comprehensive information on nonprofit economic performance in the previous year. Given the unusual circumstances of 2020, MCN actively surveyed nonprofits and issued special reports in May and July to assess the impact of those events.
