Elders on the Edge
As Minnesota’s population grows grayer, the economic security of the state’s elderly becomes an increasingly important issue. “Elders Living on the Edge: When Meeting Basic Needs Exceeds Available Income in Minnesota,” a 2009 policy brief published by Wider Opportunities for Women as part of the national Elder Economic Security Initiative, states that “low-income elders in Minnesota face financial challenges that threaten their economic security and the health of their communities .“ Wider Opportunities for Women propose policy recommendations in the report to help mitigate the expanding economic pressure faced by the state’s seniors in the areas of housing, health care, food and transportation.
The policy recommendations draw on the underlying data from the “elder index” Wider Opportunity for Women’s “The Elder Economic Security Standard Index for Minnesota.” The index was developed to provide understanding of the extent of the economic difficulties not captured in the official poverty level measures.
Some have suggested raising the retirement age as one method of addressing the elderly and their economic challenges. Alicia Munell’s 2008 book, Working Longer: The Solution to the Retirement Income Challenge (HD6280 .M86 2008), discusses this idea.
