Mental Health Care
On July 16, 2022, a new three-digit emergency number will be available across the country. Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis can dial "988" for help, a new code that will operate through the existing National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. According to the December 2021 988 Appropriations Report, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration "sees 988 as the linchpin and catalyst for a transformed behavioral health crisis system in much the same way that, over time, 911 spurred the growth of emergency medical services in the United States."
A few new reports added to the Library's collection in June also focus on mental health care in Minnesota. A new report from the Rural Health Advisory Committee looks at mental health care in rural parts of the state: Recommendations on Strengthening Mental Health Care in Rural Minnesota. One of their recommendations is to promote helplines, including the new 988 line, by adding them to "public-facing materials, including city and county websites, health care provider websites, and insurance cards."
Another new report reviews compliance with mental health parity laws in Minnesota. As noted in the introduction to Mental Health Parity Compliance and Oversight, both "state and federal laws requiring mental health parity have grown considerably over the past twenty-five years." The Minnesota Departments of Commerce and Health both play a role in reviewing the mental health parity of health plans as they work to ensure that care for mental health and substance use disorders is covered at the same level as medical and surgical care.
This month's collection of new reports also includes Health, United States, 2019, the most recent snapshot of the "health status of the nation" from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This annual report provides a macro picture of health in the country, including life expectancy at birth, maternal mortality, suicide rates, and the incidence of heart disease and cancer.
