Writing that Resonates
Books on clear writing have been popular with our legislative audience over the years, so we always keep an eye out for new or updated titles. This month, we feature three new books in our collection that are sure to garner interest.
Wordcraft: the Complete Guide to Clear, Powerful Writing, a recently updated Chicago University Press title, was originally published in 2006 as A Writer's Coach. Former journalist and legendary wordsmith, Jack Hart, breaks down the writing process into a series of manageable steps providing humor, insight, and real-world examples – both good and bad – along the way. He demonstrates how to bring such characteristics as force, brevity, clarity, rhythm, and color to any kind of writing.
Economical Writing, Third Edition: Thirty-Five Rules for Clear and Persuasive Prose is a collection of thirty-five pithy rules for making your writing clear, concise, and effective. Author Deirdre Nansen McCloskey is a prolific writer and distinguished professor of economics, history, English, and communication at the University of Illinois at Chicago. One reviewer sums up her engaging style: "The book delights because it demonstrates—clearly, persuasively, enjoyably—the importance of paying attention to rules and rhythms in one’s writing." All in 153 pages!
The 5th edition of Legal Drafting in a Nutshell, published by West, has just been released. (Not to be confused with another popular title in our collection, Legal Writing in a Nutshell!) This new edition of Legal Drafting “provides both a large scale, macro overview of the drafting process as well as small scale, micro focused discussion of the mechanics of legal documents at the sentence, word, and punctuation level." This manual is designed to be a guide for clear, structured thinking about drafting in order to provide readers with a process to follow when assembling legal documents such as contracts, instruments, legislation, and regulations.
