Climate Change & Renewable Energy Alternatives
The global warming discussion has permeated American life. Amidst a growing consensus that the resources from which we derive energy needs to change, Minnesota has focused on renewable alternatives such as wind and ethanol. Minnesota lawmakers recently passed ambitious energy-related legislation. Senate File 4 amending Minnesota's Renewable Energy Objectives statute (M.S. 216B.1691) adjusts the target for 16 electric utilities in the state regarding their proportion of electric generation based on renewable resources. Under the new legislation, Minnesota utilities will have to derive 25 percent of their electricity from renewable sources such as wind, hydroelectric, biomass, and others by 2025. (Xcel Energy has a target of 30 percent by 2020).
Other energy-related proposals await discussion this session.
