State-by-State Comparisons
When we're asked to investigate how Minnesota compares to other states on a given issue, we may have a report that quickly provides an answer. A new item in our collection this month provides a good example of just such a state-by-state report: SSI Recipients by State and County, 2021. Not only does this report make it easy to compare Minnesota with other states, but it also provides a county-to-county comparison within the state.
Another resource we often turn to is the National Survey of State Laws. Now in its 9th edition, this invaluable resource includes recently updated sections on antitrust, personal income tax, and abortion laws, as well as brand new sections on voter laws and beer law. A print copy of this publication is available in both our State Office Building and Minnesota Senate Building locations, and the online version of this publication is accessible from any computer in the legislative network. The online version is continually updated and allows you to not only see the current state law on a given topic, but to also see how that law has changed since 2005.
The beginning of the legislative session is a good time to remind you that the Library also provides access to Westlaw to legislators and staff, another useful tool for state-by-state comparisons. Their 50 State Statutory Surveys cover various areas of law, including criminal law, family law, and environmental law. If you don't already have access to Westlaw through your legislative office, you can "check out" a password from the Library to access these state statutory surveys or conduct case law research.
