Wages and Working Conditions
Labor is in flux amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the so-called Great Resignation, with workers leaving or changing jobs, doing jobs from home and on the front lines, even petitioning for unions and taking actions like strikes. Several recent reports added to the Library's collection address aspects of two longstanding worker goals: higher wages and better working conditions.
The Labor Standards unit at the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) responds to more than 20,000 inquiries annually from workers, employers, and others about various wage-and-hour concerns, including Women's Economic Security Act protections. DLI published its annual “Women’s Economic Security Act” report in December, covering its enforcement of employment laws in these and other areas.
Also in December, DLI published its “Minnesota Minimum Wage Report 2021.” Soon after, on January 1, 2022, Minnesota’s minimum wage rose to $10.33 an hour for large employers, and $8.42 an hour for smaller employers, trainees, and minors.
Meanwhile, Minnesota’s two biggest cities have charted their own course in bumping up wages. The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis recently released reports on the local minimum wage ordinances in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. These two reports examine the aggregate labor market effects of minimum wage increases in the respective cities.
A report from the National Employment Law Project last month examines working conditions in Minnesota at a single notable employer: Amazon. “Injuries, Dead-End Jobs, and Racial Inequity in Amazon's Minnesota Operations: A Case Study on the Human Costs of Amazon's Growth” includes recommendations for action at the state level.
