A tierce, a pocket, and a lug
English is rife with interesting collective nouns: a parliament of owls, a pride of lions, a raft (or paddling!) of ducks. And it's also full of unique words for agricultural units of measurement: a tierce of lard, a pocket of milled rice, a lug of cherries. Whatever your agricultural product of interest, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's newest edition of Agricultural Statistics has you covered. Use it to find out how much flaxseed is grown in Minnesota or how much honey is harvested here each year.
Flocks of sheep, turkeys, and chickens all make an appearance in the annual report from the Board of Animal Health. As one of the largest turkey producers in the country, the health of Minnesota's turkey population is a matter of interest to many. This report analyzes the health of those flocks and touches on other issues of animal health, including statewide incidents of rabies and information about chronic wasting disease among deer populations.
A bench, a sentence, or a bevy are all words that can be used to describe a group of judges. The House Research Department is out with an updated version of their helpful publication, The Minnesota Judiciary: A Guide for Legislators. This is sure to come in handy for those of us accustomed to the work and processes of the legislative branch, but less familiar with what goes on in the judicial branch. The guide includes a section on the relationship between the legislature and judiciary.
