K-12 Education
According to the Minnesota Constitution, Article 13, Section 1, “it is the duty of the legislature to establish a general and uniform system of public schools.” The Library seeks out materials to assist members in fulfilling this responsibility.
A new timeline from the Minnesota Department of Education, Minnesota School Finance History 1849-2005, shows how previous generations handled this mandate. This historical overview may be supplemented with a current synopsis of revenue, aid, and property tax levies found in K-12 Education Finance Overview, 2009-2010.
Measurable results are also a key component to evaluate how Minnesota is doing. One such measuring tool is Minnesota TIMSS: The Rest of the Story: A Summary of Results as of October 2009: Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study. This report states “For MN students, the competition for jobs will not be just the surrounding states - rather our students will compete for jobs globally and must be prepared to compete successfully at that level.”
