Minnesota's Homeless
The Minnesota Legislature asked the Minnesota Department of Human Services to study the issue of homeless youth, runaways, and the coordination of services, and report back in 2007. Drawing on their own data, and data from Wilder Research, the department's findings are presented in Report to the Legislature: Runaway and Homeless Youth in Minnesota available at http://archive.leg.state.mn.us/docs/2007/mandated/070246.pdf.
Wilder Research, an offshoot of the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation, conducts a triennial statewide survey of people who are homeless or living in temporary housing programs. Their one-day survey is the most comprehensive study of its kind in the nation, according to the Minnesota Coalition for the Homeless. Results of the most recent survey, conducted in October 2006, found a higher proportion of homeless people with mental health or substance abuse problems and an increase in the proportion of formerly incarcerated people.
