All-Day Kindergarten

One of the first bills introduced in the Minnesota Legislature in 2007 proposes authorizing funding for voluntary full-day kindergarten. Minnesota is not one of the twenty-nine states that provides a full day's funding for all-day kindergarten. A recent Star Tribune editorial highlighted a Minneapolis Foundation report, Why Minnesota Needs All-Day, Every Day Kindergarten. Their 2006 report stresses the benefits of all-day kindergarten and summarizes results from several local school district results.

Other studies are a less confident of the benefits. The Rand Corporation's conclusions in School Readiness, Full-Day Kindergarten, and Student Achievement "reinforce the findings of earlier studies that suggest that full-day kindergarten programs may not enhance achievement in the long term."
