GOVERNOR PAWLENTY ORDERS U.S. AND STATE FLAGS AT HALF-STAFF IN HONOR OF INTERSTATE 35W BRIDGE MEMORIAL DAY -- July 30, 2010
 

Saint Paul -- Governor Tim Pawlenty has hereby ordered all U.S. flags and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at the Capitol Complex, including state buildings, monuments, and grounds in proximity to and including the Minnesota State Capitol, from sunrise until sunset on Sunday, August 1, 2010. The Governor also encouraged the people of Minnesota and places of worship to mark this day with a moment of silence at 6:05 p.m., to honor those who lost their lives on Wednesday, August 1, 2007.

The following is the text of the Governor’s official proclamation:

WHEREAS: On Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at 6:05 p.m., the Interstate 35W bridge spanning the Mississippi River collapsed in Minneapolis; and

WHEREAS: Thirteen people died and 145 were hurt when the Interstate 35W bridge collapsed; and

WHEREAS: The spirit of Minnesota was evident in the moments and days following the tragedy when rescue workers, emergency responders, and courageous citizens chose to run towards the danger to assist those in need; and

WHEREAS: The collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge has reminded Minnesotans of the enormous debt of gratitude we owe to our police officers, fire and rescue personnel, and other first responders; and

WHEREAS: We affirm that this tragedy has revealed the resolve of our people who – along with the support of citizens from across the country – pulled together to rebuild and move forward; and

WHEREAS: The hearts and prayers of all Minnesotans continue to go out to the families of those who lost their lives or were injured and we ask all Minnesotans to help comfort the families and friends of the victims.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, TIM PAWLENTY, Governor of Minnesota, do hereby proclaim Sunday, August 1, 2010, to be observed as: INTERSTATE 35W BRIDGE MEMORIAL DAY in the State of Minnesota and do hereby order all U.S. flags and Minnesota flags to be flown at half-staff at the Capitol Complex, including state buildings, monuments, and grounds in proximity to and including the Minnesota State Capitol, from sunrise until sunset on Sunday, August 1, 2010. I also encourage the people of Minnesota and places of worship to mark this day with a moment of silence at 6:05 p.m., to honor those who lost their lives on Wednesday, August 1, 2007.
