Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse

Function: Work with organizations in Minnesota to develop higher education programs to prepare professionals to provide safety and services to victims of violence, hold perpetrators accountable for their actions, and address the root causes of violence; assist Minnesota postsecondary institutions in educating students, faculty, and staff about their rights and responsibilities regarding harassment and violence on campus and in the community; serve as resource for selected professional licensing agencies in Minnesota. "Professionals" may include teachers, school administrators, guidance counselors, law enforcement officers, lawyers, physicians, nurses, psychologists, and social workers.

Higher Education Center Against Violence and Abuse
History: The 1993 legislation authorizing the creation of the Center, came from the recommendations of the Task Force on Professional Education About Violence and Abuse, authorized by 1992 Laws of Minnesota Ch. 571, Art. 16, Sec. 2. The 1993 law directed the Higher Education Coordinating Board to convene an advisory committee to select a postsecondary institution to receive the contract for the Center. The University of Minnesota was selected in 1994. The name was changed from the Higher Education Center Against Violence and Abuse to Minnesota Center Against Violence and Abuse (MINCAVA) in 1998.
