Expungement Working Group

Active dates:2013-2014
Function: The Expungement Working Group was established to examine issues surrounding current expungement law and to propose solutions to these issues for the 2014 legislative session.
History: It can be very hard to find housing and employment for convicted criminals due to the public availability of records on these individuals. In Minnesota, judges have the power expunge the records of certain offenders making it easier for them to move past their criminal record. However, a Minnesota Supreme Court decision in 2013 ruled that judges only have the authority to expunge court records leaving criminal records open to the public through agencies such as the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The Expungement Working Group was established in 2013 to examine and propose solutions to these issues.
Membership: 26 members. Chairs: Representative Debra Hilstrom, Senator Bobby Joe Champion
