11/17/2015 10:14:43 AM

Governor calls for state boards, councils, and committees to reflect rich diversity of Minnesota

Governor Mark Dayton is encouraging all Minnesotans to apply for appointment to one of nearly 300 openings on Minnesota boards, councils, and commissions. These bodies draw upon the expertise of Minnesotans to help build a better Minnesota that works for everyone.

Among the nearly 300 current openings on state boards, councils, and commissions are positions with the Council on Disability; the Urban Initiative Board; the Center for Rural Policy Development; the Cultural and Ethnic Communities Leadership Council; the Minnesota Job Skills Partnership Board; numerous professional boards; and many others. To see a full list of board, council, and committee openings, and to apply, visit the Minnesota Secretary of State's website. Applications are due by Tuesday, November 24, 2015.

Diversifying State Government

Governor Dayton is committed to ensuring that state government reflects the rich diversity of the Minnesotans it serves. In January of this year, Governor Dayton established the Diversity and Inclusion Council, which works to improve the recruiting and retention of state employees from diverse backgrounds, improve the contracting process for businesses owned by Minnesotans from diverse backgrounds, and promote civic engagement in the State of Minnesota.

And just last month, Governor Dayton created a new Office of Career and Business Opportunity to provide the focus and leadership necessary to help workers and businesses of color find jobs and opportunity in Minnesota. Governor Dayton has also hired a full-time Statewide Recruiter who is charged with identifying candidates from diverse communities to fill senior leadership roles and other key positions throughout state government.

In addition to the Governor's call to diversify Minnesota's state boards, councils, and commissions, Governor Dayton is also working to foster diversity and inclusion in Minnesota's courts. Last month, the Governor hosted the second Judiciary Recruitment Summit, along with representatives from the state's diverse bar associations, Chief Justice Lorie Gildea, and members of the Governor's Commission on Judicial Selection, as part of Minnesota's ongoing efforts to increase diversity and outreach in the judicial branch.
