Commission on Judicial Selection Recommends Third Judicial District Candidates to Governor Dayton

ST. PAUL, MN – The Commission on Judicial Selection announced today it is recommending three candidates to Governor Mark Dayton for consideration to fill the current vacancy in Minnesota’s Third Judicial District. This vacancy was created upon the retirement of the Honorable Larry M. Collins, and will be chambered at Waseca in Waseca County.
 
Carol Hanks: Ms. Hanks is a shareholder at Patton, Hoversten & Berg, P.A., where she handles cases in family law, estate planning, and probate and trust administration. Previously, she was a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Renee L. Worke, the Honorable Casey J. Christian, and the Honorable Joseph A. Bueltel in the Third Judicial District. Ms. Hanks is a member of the Fifth District Bar Association, member and past president of the Steele County Bar Association, member of the Lawyers Professional Responsibility Fifth District Ethics Committee, and a Children’s Justice Initiative committee member for Steele and Waseca Counties.
 
Jeffrey Johnson: Mr. Johnson is the Third Judicial District Chief Public Defender, where is responsible for the effective delivery of public defender services to eleven counties. Previously, he was the interim managing attorney in the Third Judicial District Public Defender’s Office, president of Jeffrey M. Johnson, P.A., Assistant Third Judicial District Public Defender, and partner at Schurhammer & Johnson, P.A. Mr. Johnson is involved with the Minnesota Board of Public Defense Advanced Sentencing Advocacy Program, and was a girls youth hockey coach and member of the Exchange Club Center for Family Unity
 
Daniel McIntosh: Mr. McIntosh is the Steele County Attorney, where he is responsible for legal counsel to Steele County, adult prosecution, law enforcement training, and operations management. Previously, he was the Assistant Steele County Attorney and a judicial law clerk the Honorable Margaret A. Daly in the Fourth Judicial District. Mr. McIntosh is a member of the Owatonna Hospital Board of Trustees and United Way of Steele County Board, a youth athletics coach for Owatonna Parks & Recreation, and a presenter, planner, and sponsor of Promoting Peace Conference for Steele and Waseca Counties.
 
Minnesota’s Third Judicial District consists of Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, Waseca, and Winona Counties.
 
An announcement of the appointments will be made following an interview process over the next few weeks.
