Governor Dayton Helps Dedicate New Public Library in Ely

10/15/2014 10:14:43 AM

New library made possible with new investments in local government aid, state library grant

ST. PAUL, MN - Thanks in part to additional Local Government Aid in 2013, and a state library construction grant in 2012, the City of Ely was able to build a new public library that is accessible for individuals with disabilities. To celebrate the opening of the new facility, Governor Dayton today traveled to Ely for a dedication ceremony. In 2013, the Governor worked with the Minnesota Legislature to increase aid for cities and counties by $130 million.

"This library is a testament to what we can achieve by working together," said Governor Dayton. "I congratulate the Ely community and the many local leaders who worked so hard to build this new facility. It is a local treasure that will provide a place for people to gather, a place to inspire our children to read and learn, and an important resource for every citizen in this community."

In addition to meeting the Americans with Disability Act accessibility requirements, the new Ely Public Library includes reading and seating areas, space for children, public computers, study rooms, and public meeting areas.

Ely Public Library Construction Funding
In 2013, Governor Dayton and the Legislature invested $80 million in Minnesota's Local Government Aid program. The City of Ely has benefitted experiencing a 15 percent, or $295,000, increase in state aid this year. The city is expected to receive an additional increase in 2015.

An additional $458,699 for the Ely Public Library came from the Minnesota Department of Education's Library Improvement Construction Grant program. The program provides public libraries with funding for renovation, construction, and improvement projects that result in more accessible library facilities. Since taking office, the Governor has invested $3 million in this initiative through his 2012 and 2014 Jobs Bills.
