Share Minnesota campaign offers national model for engaging senior citizens in community service

ST. PAUL, MN - Thanks to a new initiative launched by the Dayton Administration, older Minnesotans are finding new ways to give back to their communities - and the nation is taking notice. The National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities has recognized the state's Share Minnesota campaign with this year's national Volunteers Matter Award.

Share Minnesota is an initiative of the Senior LinkAge Line One Stop Shop for Minnesota Seniors. It aims to help older Minnesotans find volunteer opportunities in their communities. Since the new initiative was launched in May 2012, Minnesota seniors have used the service to volunteer an estimated 17,470 hours across the state.

"It's great to receive national validation for our work. But, we know the real reward is helping older Minnesotans find volunteer opportunities and connecting them with other critical services," said Lt. Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon, who launched the One Stop Shop for Minnesota Seniors initiative.

Share Minnesota focuses on connecting seniors with volunteer opportunities in their communities. It is a virtual network that helps find volunteer opportunities for seniors who may not know where to find them. Minnesota seniors who are interested in using the service to find volunteer opportunities in their communities can call the Senior LinkAge Line at 1-800-333-2433 or visit MinnesotaHelp.info.

National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilities' awards are given for excellence in volunteer services and are designed to highlight successful statewide programs that are leading the way in creative use of volunteers in long-term services and supports networks.

With the award came a cash prize of $1,000 for Share Minnesota and an opportunity for Minnesota Board on Aging staff to present on Share Minnesota at the National Home and Community Based Services Conference in Washington, D.C.

In addition to Share Minnesota, Lt. Governor Prettner Solon launched the One Stop Shop for Minnesota Seniors, which helps connect seniors and their families to answers to questions about state government and other services. In late August, Prettner Solon announced the Start Minnesota initiative to help older Minnesotans find work by providing information and access to local employment resources.
