Governor Mark Dayton to Proclaim “Bob Dylan Day” in the State of Minnesota

12/8/2016 2:40:35 PM

Proclamation marks the day the Minnesota-born music legend will be awarded Nobel Prize

ST. PAUL, MN – At a community celebration in Hibbing this Saturday, December 10, 2016, Governor Mark Dayton will proclaim “Bob Dylan Day” in the State of Minnesota. The Governor’s proclamation marks the day the Minnesota-born music legend will be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. This event is open to the press. More details on the celebration are available below.

“Bob Dylan was a true son of the Iron Range in his independence, his talent, and his ability to triumph over adversity. He spoke to a generation of young Americans, myself included, who were engaged in an unending war in Vietnam, the fight for civil rights, and rapid changes in our society,” said Governor Mark Dayton. “Dylan’s influence on American music and culture will be long-lasting.”

In October, the Swedish Academy announced it was awarding Bob Dylan the 2016 Nobel Prize in Literature for creating “new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” Governor Dayton’s proclamation honors the Iron Range-raised musician for his lasting contributions to American popular song.

“Congratulations to Bob Dylan, our Minnesota poet, for the honor of receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature, the first time a songwriter has been so recognized,” said Lt. Governor Tina Smith. “Dylan is one of the most influential creative talents of our lifetime, and his work will continue to shape our music, culture, and community for generations.”

Bob Dylan was born Robert Allen Zimmerman in Duluth, Minnesota on May 24, 1941. He was raised in Hibbing, Minnesota. Dylan graduated from Hibbing High School in 1959, before briefly attending the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Dylan later relocated to Greenwich Village in New York City, where he earned critical claim and commercial success.

Dylan is the second Minnesotan to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. He joins Sauk Centre-native Sinclair Lewis, who was the first American to ever receive the award in 1930. Dylan is only the 12th American writer to receive the honor since the inception of the prize in 1901. More information about the Nobel Prize in Literature can be found here.
