Statement on Governor Dayton's Back Surgery

10/14/2018 4:30:34 PM

On Friday, Governor Mark Dayton underwent a successful back surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Governor Dayton’s doctor is pleased with how Friday’s surgery went and believes the procedure will strengthen the Governor’s legs, as intended.

The Governor is following his doctor’s recommendation to undergo a follow-up procedure on Monday that will further strengthen the fusion in his lower back. This final surgery will provide more support for his vertebrae, and better ensure the long-term stability of his back and legs.

The Governor’s surgery is scheduled to begin at 8:00am. During the procedure, Governor Dayton will be under general anesthesia. Afterward, the Governor will remain in the hospital for a few days, where he plans to be in contact with his commissioners and staff.

The following is a statement from Governor Dayton:

“I have great confidence in the outstanding medical professionals at Mayo Clinic, who have taken excellent care of me this weekend. I am following the advice of my doctor, who believes that Friday’s surgery has alleviated the compression on my nerves, which will greatly-improve my leg strength and balance. This additional procedure will ensure my fusion heals completely. Improving both of these conditions, for the long-term, will help me enjoy playing with my grandchildren for years to come.

“I want to thank the many Minnesotans who have sent me their well wishes these last several days. As with previous treatments at Mayo Clinic, I have been in communication with my Commissioners and staff throughout the weekend, working on behalf of the people of Minnesota.”
