Commission on Judicial Selection Recommends Fourth Judicial District Candidates to Governor Dayton

ST. PAUL, MN – The Commission on Judicial Selection announced today it is recommending three candidates to Governor Mark Dayton for consideration to fill the current vacancy in Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District. This vacancy was created upon the appointment of the Honorable Anne K. McKeig to the Minnesota Supreme Court, and will be chambered at Minneapolis in Hennepin County.
 
Michael Burns: Mr. Burns in an Assistant Hennepin County Attorney, where he handles criminal prosecution. Previously, he was an adjunct professor at Hamline University, an associate attorney at Halleland Lewis Nilan & Johnson, P.A., an Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General, and a probation officer for Hennepin County Community Corrections. Mr. Burns is a Race Director for the Susan G. Komen of Minnesota Race for the Cure, a board member of the Mitchell Hamline University School of Law Alumni Association, a participant and member of Getting Word Project, and a former board member of the Minneapolis Civilian Review Authority.
 
Kim Mammedaty: Ms. Mammedaty is an Assistant Hennepin County Attorney in the Civil Division, where she is the General Counsel for the Human Services and Public Health Department. Previously, she was a tribal attorney for the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, an attorney at East Central Legal Services, the Executive Director of the Council for American Indian Ministry, and an Assistant Hennepin County Attorney in the Child Protection Division. Ms. Mammedaty is a volunteer for the Native American Church of North America, and previously volunteered at Bdote Learning Center and the Minnesota Indian Women’s Resources Center, was the Chair of the Indian Health Board of Minneapolis, and was a board member of the Native Public Defense Corporation.
 
Nelson Peralta: Mr. Peralta is a solo practitioner at Peralta Law Firm, where his practice includes areas of immigration law, personal injury, and general litigation. Previously, he was a founding shareholder of Peralta & Peralta, Ltd., and an associate attorney at Capistrant & Associates, P.A., Livgard & Rabuse, P.L.L.P, and Peterson, Fishman, Livgard & Capistrant, P.L.L.P. Mr. Peralta is a board member of the Collaborative Community Law Initiative, a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, and a volunteer attorney at Volunteer Lawyers Network. He is also a member and past president of the Minnesota Hispanic Bar Association, and previously served on the Board of Directors for Minnesota Continuing Legal Education.
 
Minnesota’s Fourth Judicial District consists of Hennepin County.
 
An announcement of the appointment will be made following an interview process over the next few weeks.
