Lt. Governor Prettner Solon recognizes state workers for charitable giving

State employees raised nearly $900,000 for Minnesota charities this year

ST. PAUL, MN - Minnesota's public employees are active members of their communities - raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for worthy causes across the state. This year, state employees raised more than $896,000 for charitable organizations in Minnesota. To honor this great work, Lt. Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon held a ceremony today at the Capitol to celebrate the contributions of Minnesota's state employees.

"Minnesota's public employees make valuable contributions to our state every day. In their jobs, they deliver critical services that Minnesotans depend on, while as private citizens they are active members of their communities across the state," said Lt. Governor Prettner Solon. "Like all Minnesotans, I am grateful for their service and the daily contributions they make to our state."

The $896,000 raised by more than 2,300 state employees this year marks a 1.6 percent increase over last year's total. More information can be found on the Minnesota Combined Charities website.

Hero Award Winners
At the ceremony, three state employees were given the Hero Award for their efforts to raise money for Minnesota charities.

Brenda Tuma, Department of Employment and Economic Development
Tuma, a safety and health officer, has organized the Combined Charities Campaign at the department for a decade. An energetic and creative organizer, Tuma has significantly increased charitable giving by hosting an annual chili cook-off and holding a themed basket raffle. Her efforts have increased charitable giving by the Department of Employment and Economic Development by 12 percent.

Nathan Anderson, Department of Revenue
Anderson, a tax specialist, only recently began organizing the Combined Charities Campaign at the Department of Revenue. Despite being his first year, Anderson set strong goals for the department and held numerous fundraisers. These efforts helped the Department of Revenue meet their charitable giving goals this year.

Christine Malec, Pollution Control Agency
A program administrator at the Pollution Control Agency, Malec has served as Combined Charities Coordinator for the past three years. By engaging employees across the agency, Malec organized book sales, silent auctions, and other fundraisers for charities. Through her leadership, the Pollution Control Agency has consistently met or exceeded fundraising goals.
