9/14/2018 5:00:00 PM

With Governor Dayton’s Executive Order, five Minnesota National Guard personnel will support response and recovery efforts in the southeastern United States

ST. PAUL, MN – Governor Mark Dayton today issued Executive Order 18-13, directing a Minnesota National Guard helicopter and response team to assist with Hurricane Florence relief efforts in North Carolina. Governor Dayton’s Executive Order approves a request for assistance from the Minnesota National Guard through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC).

“I thank the courageous Minnesota National Guard soldiers who will provide this critical assistance,” said Governor Dayton. “Minnesotans stand ready to assist in any way we are able.”

Governor Dayton’s Executive Order authorizes a response team from Minnesota to travel to North Carolina, and includes one CH-47 Chinook Heavy Transport Helicopter, four crew members, and one liaison officer. The team will provide general personnel and supply aviation support to relief efforts that have been ongoing in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia since the storm made landfall.

Strengthening for days, Hurricane Florence made landfall as a major hurricane on Thursday, September 13, 2018, and has travelled inland. Areas of the southeastern United States are expected to be severely impacted by damaging winds, extensive rainfall, and dangerous flooding, persisting for an indeterminate period of time and critically endangering lives and property.

The Minnesota National Guard, and the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management division, continue to monitor nationwide requests for hurricane assistance, to determine how Minnesota can continue to best assist.

About the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC)
EMAC is a mutual aid agreement between all 50 states. A requesting state asks for resources (people, equipment, etc.) based on their needs. Agencies in other states with those resources are able to respond to a request, but there is no obligation to participate. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Homeland Security and Emergency Management division coordinates the state’s EMAC requests.

Additional information about EMAC is available at https://www.emacweb.org/.
