St. Paul - Governor Dayton is looking for dedicated individuals to serve as members of the newly created State Capitol Preservation Commission and the Sunset Advisory Commission.

The State Capitol Preservation Commission will coordinate the restoration, protection, risk management and preservation of the Capitol building. The 22-member commission was included in the Legacy bill passed in the 2011 Special Legislative Session.

Members will work to develop a multi-year pre-design plan for the restoration of the Capitol building that can be periodically reviewed and modified by the commission. The plan will identify various functions and requirements of the Capitol complex in order for the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government to fulfill their respective duties. It will also examine long-term maintenance and preservation needs along with the development of an overall financial plan.

Governor Dayton appoints four public members to serve two-year terms. Public members may not serve for more than three consecutive terms and may receive compensation for time spent serving on the commission.

The Sunset Advisory Commission will be responsible for considering whether a public need exists for the continuation of a state agency and its advisory committees or if various functions can be consolidated or discontinued. Members will then submit their recommendations for an agency to the legislature and Governor. The commission will be expected to hold public hearings and review various criteria when considering each agency.

The 12-member commission was created as part of the Sunset Act, which was included in the Omnibus State Government Finance bill passed in the 2011 Special Legislative Session. Under the Sunset Act, each state agency and its related boards, commissions and committees will be subject to review. Each agency will submit a report to the Sunset Advisory Commission when it is scheduled for review.
