Statement from Governor Mark Dayton on Proposed Health Insurance Rates

6/18/2018 9:34:45 AM

ST. PAUL, MN – Today, the Minnesota Department of Commerce released proposed rate filings submitted by the health insurance providers seeking to sell individual and small group policies in Minnesota during the upcoming Open Enrollment period. According to the Commerce Department, average health insurance premiums on the individual market could decrease by as much as 3 to 12 percent in Minnesota.

“These health insurance rate reductions are very good news for many Minnesotans, but very expensive for others. Minnesota taxpayers paid $543 million for health insurance companies to stabilize their rates this year and next year.

“Despite these reductions, health insurance is still much too expensive for many Minnesotans and their families. Last year, over 349,000 people went without health insurance, because prices are still way too high.

“Minnesota taxpayers should not have to keep subsidizing insurance companies to hold down health care costs. We need a marketplace solution.

“I have proposed the MinnesotaCare Buy-In Option, which would allow many Minnesotans to buy good coverage at costs as much as 28 percent lower than present commercial plans. Unfortunately, most Republican Legislators sided with the big insurance companies against Minnesotans and opposed this plan. I urge next year’s Governor and Legislature to put our citizens first and allow access to lower-cost quality health insurance.”
