Commission on Judicial Selection Recommends Second Judicial District Candidates to Governor Dayton

ST. PAUL, MN – The Commission on Judicial Selection announced today it is recommending three candidates to Governor Mark Dayton for consideration to fill the current vacancy in Minnesota’s Second Judicial District. This vacancy occurred upon the retirement of the Honorable Margaret M. Marrinan, and will be chambered at St. Paul in Ramsey County.
 
Mary Madden: Referee Madden serves as a District Court Referee in the Fourth Judicial District, where she presides over family law cases and is the lead judicial officer on the Family Court Enhancement Project. Previously, she served as a Referee in the Second Judicial District, as an Administrative Law Judge, and as a solo practitioner at Madden Law Offices. Additionally, she is a Residency Supervisor in the Legal Residency Program at Mitchell Hamline School of Law and is currently serving as the Co-Chair of the Fourth Judicial District Domestic Violence Coordinating Council.
 
Kelly Olmstead: Ms. Olmstead is an Assistant County Attorney in the Adult Criminal Division of the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office, where she is responsible for the prosecution of felony crimes and founded the Ramsey County Auto Theft Task Force. Previously, she was in private civil practice at Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi, L.L.P., where she worked with complex patent and business litigation. Additionally, Ms. Olmstead is currently serving as the President of the Ramsey County Bar Foundation, and is a volunteer with the City of Roseville and Habitat for Humanity.
 
Sophia Vuelo: Ms. Vuelo is a solo practitioner at Vuelo Law, where she manages a high volume caseload in juvenile protection, family, and criminal matters. Previously, she was a Managing Attorney at Catholic Charities, Special Assistant Ramsey County Attorney, Assistant Public Defender in the Second Judicial District, and an Assistant Rochester City Attorney. She is currently on the Board of Directors of the Collaborative Community Law Initiative, an active volunteer at Weaver Elementary School in Maplewood, and the former Vice-President of the Hmong American Bar Association.
 
Minnesota’s Second Judicial District consists of Ramsey County.
 
An announcement of the appointment will be made following an interview process over the next few weeks.
