Commission on Judicial Selection Recommends Court of Appeals Candidates to Governor Dayton

ST. PAUL, MN – The Commission on Judicial Selection announced today it is recommending three candidates to Governor Mark Dayton for consideration to fill the upcoming Eighth Congressional District vacancy on the Minnesota Court of Appeals. This vacancy will occur upon the retirement of the Honorable Lawrence B. Stauber at the end of May.
 
Sharon Chadwick – Ms. Chadwick is a Senior Assistant Saint Louis County Attorney in the Criminal Division, where she handles adult felony prosecutions. Previously, she was a Senior Assistant Saint Louis County Attorney in the Public Health and Human Services Division, an Assistant Sixth Judicial District Public Defender, a legal aid attorney at Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota, and a judicial law clerk in the Sixth Judicial District. Ms. Chadwick is the Governance Chair of the Summer Work Outreach Project, a board member of Gender Justice, and a Trustee of AFSCME Local 3761. 
 
Judge James Florey – Judge Florey is a District Court Judge in the Sixth Judicial District, where he has served as Chief Judge from 2006-2012 and Assistant Chief Judge from 2004-2006. Prior to his appointment, he was an Assistant St. Louis County Attorney for 15 years and a staff attorney at Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota. Judge Florey is the previous Vice-Chair and current member of the Minnesota Judicial Council, a member of the State E-Court Steering Committee, and a former member of the Special Redistricting Panel.
 
Judge Eric Hylden – Judge Hylden is a District Court Judge in the Sixth Judicial District, where he is the presiding civil judge for the Duluth courthouse. Prior to his appointment, he was an attorney and partner at Reyelts, Leighton, Bateman, & Hylden and was a law clerk at Hanson, Dordell, et al. Judge Hylden is the Chair of the Minnesota Supreme Court Advisory Committee on the Minnesota Rules of Civil Procedure, a board member of the Minnesota District Judges Association, and is a volunteer martial arts instructor at North Shore Taekwondo. 
 
An announcement of the appointment will be made following an interview process over the next few weeks.
