Executive Order authorizes the Minnesota National Guard to assist in efforts to protect Minnesotans, local businesses, and visitors during Super Bowl LII

ST. PAUL, MN – Governor Mark Dayton today issued Executive Order 18-02, to authorize the Minnesota National Guard to assist in efforts to protect Minnesotans, local businesses, and visitors during Super Bowl LII. Governor Dayton’s Executive Order follows a years-long public safety planning process between local law enforcement agencies and all levels of government, led by the City of Minneapolis.

“At the request of the City of Minneapolis, I have authorized the Minnesota National Guard to assist local law enforcement agencies during Super Bowl LII,” said Governor Dayton. “Our shared priority is to ensure that all Minnesotans and over one million expected visitors have safe and enjoyable experiences, as we showcase the Bold North to the world.”

The Governor’s Executive Order authorizes National Guard assistance from Friday, January 26, 2018 through Monday, February 5, 2018. The National Guard will assist the efforts of local law enforcement in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, under the leadership of the Minneapolis Police Department. Their responsibilities will include assistance to enhance public safety, traffic control, security for key venues and infrastructure, security for public transportation, and other public safety responsibilities.

“Under the Governor’s Executive Order, the Minnesota National Guard will take the necessary steps to help protect the lives, property, and security of Minnesotans and visitors during Super Bowl LII,” said Minnesota National Guard Adjutant General Jon Jensen. “We are committed to working with local law enforcement to support their efforts for a safe and successful event.”

The Minnesota Super Bowl Host Committee will cover any costs to the State associated with this event. Requests for assistance from the National Guard are routine for the Super Bowl, and have been made for almost every Super Bowl since 2002.

Super Bowl LII is a unique event of significant national and international importance, and is expected to attract over one million attendees from around the state and around the world. For more information, visit mnsuperbowl.com.
