ST. PAUL, MN – Today, Governor Mark Dayton announced the commencement of a process to fill an at-large vacancy on the Commission on Judicial Selection. This vacancy was created upon the resignation of Mary Al Balber.
The application process is now open for this vacancy. An individual wishing to apply may submit a letter of interest and resume to Lidya Makonnen, Appointments Coordinator, via email at
lidya.makonnen@state.mn.us. Application materials are due by close of business, Tuesday, January 26, 2016.
The Commission on Judicial Selection solicits, considers, and recommends candidates to the Governor for vacancies in the District Trial Courts and the Workers’ Compensation Court of Appeals. Upon request by the Governor, the Commission has also considered candidates to the appellate courts. It is a joint Commission, appointed by the Governor and the Supreme Court, and made up of nine at-large members, including the Chair, and four district members from each of the ten Judicial Districts. Commission members appointed by the Governor serve at the pleasure of the Governor.
Since at-large members consider vacancies statewide, a significant time commitment is expected of members. No compensation shall be received and no expenses incurred will be reimbursed.
Please note that members of the Commission may not be considered or appointed to fill a district court judicial vacancy for one year following the end of their membership. /governor/assets/district_judge_application_procedures_tcm1055-115172.pdfProspective applicants can review all Commission procedures and guidelines here.
