Statement from Governor Dayton on School Safety

5/18/2018 12:24:35 PM

ST. PAUL, MN – Governor Mark Dayton today issued the following statement, urging Legislators to act on legislation to protect Minnesota children and reduce gun violence.

“Another horrific tragedy has occurred in one of our nation’s schools. Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and all of their schoolmates, who will have to live with the physical and emotional wounds from the atrocity.

“This shooting underscores the imperative that the Minnesota Legislature pass my school safety proposals immediately and send them to me in a clean, stand-alone bill that I can sign, today.

“One student, who survived the shooting said, ‘It’s been happening everywhere. I always felt like eventually it would happen here. I wasn’t surprised, I was just scared.’

“It is all of our responsibility to do everything possible to prevent ‘everywhere’ from spreading to and afflicting Minnesota kids.

“In addition to these needed school safety measures, I strongly urge Minnesota students, parents, teachers, and Legislators to keep fighting for commonsense gun safety measures, which over 90 percent of Minnesotans support, that will reduce gun violence in our schools and communities.”
