Governor Dayton Declares “National Number One Softball Team Minnesota Gophers Day” in the State of Minnesota

Gophers enter NCAA Tournament as top-ranked team in nation, after going a record breaking 54-3 in the regular season
 
ST. PAUL, MN – Governor Mark Dayton declared today to be “National Number One Softball Team Minnesota Gophers Day” in the State of Minnesota. The Gophers Softball Team won a record-breaking 54 games this season, including 25 in a row as part of an ongoing winning streak. They also won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. This afternoon, the Gophers began the NCAA Tournament with a 11-3 victory over Louisiana Tech in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
 
“The Gophers are the top-ranked team in the nation, however they were inexplicably left unseeded in the NCAA Tournament, which begins today in Tuscaloosa, Alabama,” said Governor Dayton in his proclamation. “The State of Minnesota congratulates the University of Minnesota Gopher Women’s softball team on their historic season, and wishes them success in the NCAA Tournament.”
 
This year, the Gophers Softball Team won a program record 15 Big Ten team and individual awards this season, including:
·         Kendyl Lindaman – Player and the Freshman of the Year
·         Sara Groenewegen – Pitcher of the Year
·         Head Coach Jessica Allister – Coach of the Year
