A STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR -- May 4, 2006

The following is a statement from Governor Tim Pawlenty regarding the unanimous passage of the Mercury Reduction Act of 2006 by the Minnesota Senate today. The identical bill unanimously passed the House of Representatives on Monday.

Earlier this year, Governor Pawlenty called for legislation that would reduce mercury emissions from Minnesota's largest coal fired power plants by 90% well in advance of the federal regulations that take effect in 2018.

Last week, Governor Pawlenty announced a bi-partisan, consensus agreement to accomplish that goal.

"This legislation is likely the most aggressive mercury reduction initiative in the country.  Our lakes, our environment, and our health will benefit immeasurably.  I am proud of the work of our Administration and all of the stakeholders in getting this legislation passed and look forward to signing it into law."
