GOVERNOR PAWLENTY ACTIVATES EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER IN RESPONSE TO POTENTIAL RED RIVER FLOODING -- March 30, 2006

In response to potential flooding in the Red River Valley, Governor Pawlenty said today he has activated the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC). Representatives from the Department of Public Safety's Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) will staff the SEOC to communicate with local officials in areas threatened by flooding.

Friday afternoon, Governor Pawlenty, Moorhead Mayor Mark Voxland, and officials from the Minnesota National Guard and HSEM will view the Red River from Breckenridge to Moorhead by air and then meet with local officials at Moorhead City Hall at 3:00 p.m. The governor will also visit an area that is especially vulnerable to flooding to view prevention measures.

"Minnesotans should know that the state stands ready to assist in the event of flooding in the Red River Valley," Governor Pawlenty said. "I want to make sure communities have the necessary resources to help them respond."

With the forecast for continuing rain over the next few days, the National Weather Service has issued several watches and warnings for the area. Residents are urged to tune to local media for the latest weather statements.

Current reports and activity:

·      HSEM has requested technical assistance from the U.S Army Corps of Engineers for the City of Breckinridge.

·      Approximately 40 county and township roads are under water, including portions of Highway 210 between Fergus Falls and Breckenridge.

·      The city of Breckenridge is building earthen dikes along the Otter Tail River by the middle school.
