St. Paul - Governor Tim Pawlenty today was named chairman of the National Governors Association's (NGA) Education, Early Childhood, and Workforce Committee for 2005-06. The announcement came at the conclusion of the NGA Annual Meeting in Des Moines, Iowa, this afternoon. The NGA Education, Early Childhood, and Workforce Committee focuses on improving elementary education, reforming high schools, and ensuring that students are prepared to succeed in college and the workforce. Governor Pawlenty has served as vice chairman of the committee since last year. He replaces Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, the outgoing committee chair. "As chairman, I will continue to work toward nationwide goals of establishing clear standards, measuring performance, and increasing opportunities for students," Governor Pawlenty said. Governor Pawlenty has made improving and reforming education a top priority in Minnesota. He recently signed a dramatic $800 million increase to K-12 education, the largest in state history; created new options for high school students to seek college credit through the Get Ready, Get Credit program; and created the Q-Comp program to recognize excellence in teaching. "Teachers are on the front lines educating our children, and we must support their efforts to excel in this all-important task," Governor Pawlenty said.
